Why would I want Western Red Cedar?
I use Western Red Cedar for a number of reasons.
WRC is very attractive, with a wide variety of wood grain.
WRC is lightweight but sturdy, (almost 80% as strong as oak), so this allows me to use full 5/4 stock which is over a full 1" thick and makes for very sturdy constructions and still be light enough to move easily unlike other materials.
Another advantage of WRC is it's durability. It is more durable than even other species of cedar in North America.
In addition, WRC is insect resistant, and fungus resistant.
Can I leave my furniture outdoors over the winter ?
That is entirely up to you, however, the finish will last longer when not exposed to u.v. and moisture and temperature cycles. There are covers available for most of the line.
The adirondack and garden chairs can stack one upside down on the other, resting on armrests.
A tree limb fell on one of my chairs, Can I get my chair repaired ?
Yes. we can do repairs, this is much more economical than replacing the chair, or table etc. If the damage is extensive, we may recommend replacement.
We can approximate the current finish look on the repair or replacements.
How do I finish my furniture?
- Oil/varnish combinations: the easiest to use, flood on, wipe off in 10-15 minutes; continue to touch up as needed.
- Oil/Water Based Stain: Your cedar chair can be stained any color utilizing a good brand of oil or water based stain.
Stain finishes are popular due to their beautiful appearance and simple maintenance.
You should always keep you furniture clean. When the finish begins looking dull, it is best to first wash the furniture with mild detergent and water (Do not use a pressure washer) rinse thoroughly , let dry completely. If the finish is very degraded, you may need to use a brightener product, available at any hardware store. Just follow directions from manufacturer. You are then ready to apply stain.
- Paint: to paint cedar you must first apply an acrylic water based primer followed by a acrylic Latex enamel top coat; if you do not use a primer, the cedar will always “bleed through”” your top coat, which will be seen on lighter colors. Note: The "top coat and primer all in one will not block bleed through. You can also
paint over waterbased or oil based stains with the same proceedure, following manufacturers directions.
What will happen if I don’t put any finish on my chair?
Over time your chair will change to a silver/gray color which is favored by some people. Keeping dirt off the finish will help keep the finish brighter looking.
